There was no Strange Love Live this week, due to the Holiday (and our need to take a break/vacation). I wanted to post some sort of update since last year's NaPodPoMo to cover how SLL has evolved since last year and our move from being an exclusively audio podcast, to the live streaming video show. There's no better way to do this, than to use the video presentation which was put together for our Wordcamp Portland talk.

Yesterday we gave a talk on Podcasting at WordCamp Portland. We thought it might be a good idea to do what we know so we (and by we I mean he) compiled a video to show the evolution of Strange Love Live in the last two years. In the first 30 minutes of tonight's Crazy Talk we catch up with Will Radik, who's gearing up for another 7th Planet Picture show (link unavailable). We get some backgound on his media-making activities: live on-stage, blogging and podcasting. We discuss his summer stint as a journo-blogging intern at Blogtown, and it's here that we bring in Abraham Hyatt for a recap of Saturday's We Make The Media conference. We hash away at the controversy arising between journo's of the old and new persuasions. Should we write academic position papers to win a grant or should we adopt the tech start-up mentality, dive right in and do-it-our-own-damn-selves? When Will brings up the Free Geek model of providing equipment, training and support for those with technology needs, it got me thinking how this model would be applied to journalism and making media. Journos and media makers would have access to the technology but more important, participants would gain valuable interaction and training on the best practices of news gathering, reporting and storytelling. A win-win for journos and techies.

The upcoming We Make the Media conference is a start in this direction. Abraham is the type of person that I can sit and listen to talk/think for hours at a time. Yeah, so... sometimes an experiment (and Crazy Talk is an experiment) gets away from you. It comes to life in a hideously awful way and runs around the lab for a while before you man up, pull out the shotgun and put the poor thing out of its misery. Apparently, yours truly doesn't possess the evil-genius-Fu to kill off one of his own, so I let this thing go until the townsfolk pitchforked it for me. And boy, what a pitchfork it was. From the tweets, emails and podcasts, the message was clear: "Kill it! Kill it NOW!".

We start off with an attempt at a thoughtful discussion, all to the Avant-garde styling's of Skype connection difficulties. Later we get into... what? what's that you say??

CrazyTalk for November 11 2009

When a guest like Bobby "Fatboy" Roberts comes on to #crazytalk you know it'll be a strong show. But even though he's a comedy master of all-things-pop-culture, I really wanted him to come on and talk in-depth about producing broadcast media vs. media for the web. You see, when Cort and Fatboy first caught my attention, I was intrigued. There was even a half written blog post that I had cooked up with their show as one of the anchor thoughts. How did 2 DJ's on a radio station I never listened to catch my attention? Because they were a crossover act- posting a full plate of podcast content daily as their radio show was relegated to 5 minute bursts in between the playlist and many commercials. And when the 'midnight massacre' wave of firings took place at their station, they seemed the best equipped with a backup plan to continue on with their show.

Of course, this is a longer Crazy Talk tonight. We do warm up with some banter and geek pop culture references- but stay tuned. You'll hear how Cort and Fatboy launched into podcasting and why. We'll talk at length about The Radio Business and the future of making money on web-based media. Like my earlier conversations, this is one you won't want to miss...

When we came up with 30 hour day, we were focused on the idea of giving back to the Portland, Oregon, community. By helping organizations that help people in need with food, toys, and tech. But then it dawned on us: this is the Web. Not only that, it’s the Worldwide Web. And that got us to thinking…

We know what we’re going to do be doing with 30 straight hours of live streamed content. The question is: What are YOU going to do with it?

That’s right. We want you to use our content to help people in your community. You might get us to help promote charities in your area. You might organize a food drive around a simulcast of the 30 hour day. You might charge admission to show it to your coworkers on your cinema display.

Any idea is fair game. And we’ll help you promote whatever you’re doing.
